You may think that New York City’s second largest borough is vastly over-represented on indie radio shows, music critics’ “best of” lists, Pitchfork, and everywhere else, but apparently, it’s not represented enough. In April the LA Phil is dragging the east coast to Los Angeles for the Brooklyn Festival, a week long confab that, per the press release, “focuses on the contribution of Brooklyn artists to American music” (read: skinny white dudes with ironic mustaches).
Thank god the underappreciated burg of Brooklyn is finally getting its due.
The festival is anchored by Planetarium, a “planet-by-planet song cycle” composed by such unknown talents as Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, and Bryce Dessner of The National. (Fly in Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear and it’s a party.) The Brooklyn Phil’s new artistic director, Alan Pierson, will conduct an evening of “Brooklyn’s most adventurous new music,” which includes Central Market, a multi-movement orchestral work by Tyondai Braxton, formerly of math-rock band Battles.
And you already thought Silver Lake was an ersatz Willamsburg. Or is it the other way around?
